The Dos and Don’ts of Dressing for your Session

The most overwhelming aspect of getting ready for senior photography is deciding what to wear. Follow my set of dos and don’ts to make choosing your photo fashion easier, quicker and more fun!

DO choose a color scheme based on the setting for your photos

Taking the time to coordinate your outfit to the setting of your photos will result in the best possible images. This can go two ways: choosing complimentary colors or choosing contrasting colors. For a shoot by the lake, you could choose to wear blue to match the water, or you could go with a bright red to stand out. If you choose to contrast, be sure not to overdo it, as a little goes a long way. Whichever route you decide to take, making that decision consciously will ensure that you are happy with the result.

DON’T match everything

While coordinating outfits colors that compliment each other is a must, wearing all one color, especially if you love those candid shots, can come off a little too staged and unrealistic. It also takes away from the visual interest of the photo.

DO layer

Bring on the scarves, jewelry, hats, cardigans, and sweaters! Create depth and interest in your photos by wearing more than a single layer of clothing. It also gives us a prop to play with during the shoot.

DON’T wear everything

While layers are outstanding, wearing seven of them is not so much. Be selective when accessorizing by choosing two or three items to hit that sweet spot between boring and overwhelming.

DO pay attention to your shoes

One of the biggest mistakes clients make when dressing for a photo shoot is assuming that their feet with not be seen. Nothing is worse than a wide shot of a couple walking together through a field…only to be ruined by clashing tennis shoes plastered with a logo.

DON’T wear clothing with logos

Just as shoes can be an eyesore, so can shirts, jackets or pants that have visible logos. While they might be great for an advertisement in the next issue of People magazine, let’s keep the logos to a minimum or, even better, nonexistent, in senior shoots.

DO stay comfortable

Rather than choosing an outfit that you would never wear, select an item of clothing that you love and build your outfit around it. Go with something that you wouldn’t mind sitting, standing and playing in for a couple of hours. You will thank me later!

DON’T mix and match patterns

Plaid, stripes, and polka dots rock…just not all in the same place at the same time. Instead, choose one of your favorite patterns and pair it with solid colors. This way, your fun, patterned piece with pop in photos and you won’t make yourself dizzy looking at the pictures later!
